Felixstowe Road Runners victorious in Suffolk Grand Prix…again.

Is Felixstowe Road Runners Club the seaside town’s best kept secret?  The club has won the Suffolk Grand Prix for 2022; the fifth year in succession that it has done so, beating all other running clubs in Suffolk over 7 races of varying distances through the year.  The Road Runners won the overall title and were top club in both the women’s and men’s team competitions.  In addition, they scooped individual titles in eight different age categories along with a flurry of second and third places.

Club Captain, Robin Harper remembers his feelings after the very first victory in 2016.  “We wondered if we could retain the title and win two in a row… now we’re focusing our efforts on winning our sixth successive title next year!”

The secret to the club’s success in the championships has been a mix of individual top class performances coupled with an ability to get many club members of all ages and abilities to take part in the race series.  All runners, regardless of ability, are able to contribute points by competing and Felixstowe Road Runners’ inclusive and non-elitist approach has produced success.  “All our members are winners”, said Robin, “because everybody can take part and chip in, regardless of whether they are an age group winner or a plucky competitor, willing to run for our club”.

Individual Felixstowe Road Runners who won their categories were; Holly Taylor, her brother, Gary Taylor, Joanne Harper, Kaye Branton, Nicola Stevenson, Aidan Coughlan, Steve Brooke and Ian Sillett.

Felixstowe Road Runners organise three events in the Suffolk race calendar; the Kirton Friday 5 mile, the Richard Bennett Coastal 10 mile race and the Martlesham 7 mile race.

New members are always warmly welcome regardless of whether they are an experienced runner or a beginner.  Contact anyone on the Committee through the website at www.frr.org.uk or by coming along to Brackenbury Leisure Centre at 6.45pm on a Tuesday evening.
